First Annual 2008-2009 Scholarship Campaign!

The University of Michigan Club of Greater Boston is proud to kick-off the first annual fundraising campaign to support need-based scholarships to local students accepted to Michigan! Over the next few weeks, you may hear directly from local alumni, and we encourage you to donate to this worthy cause. Keep your eyes open for an event later this year to celebrate esteemed Michigan alumni and hear from current undergraduate scholarship recipients.

Don't watch football at home. Singing The Victors just isn't the same unless you're cheering elbow-to-elbow with other Wolverine fans and your bartender is wearing Maize and Blue. You'll also have weekly opportunities to win Michigan gear (free drawing for alumni club members—bring your Michigan alumni association card). So, watch all of the games with us—it's just like being in Ann Arbor. And, this year you have two options!

In response to popular demand for a convenient second location to watch games in Cambridge, we made arrangements to make Tavern in the Square in Porter Square our second location for game watching. We will have the backroom during all football games. A full menu will be available as well as free 3 hours parking with your Michigan Alumni ID. Also receive 10% of your meal if you show your Alumni ID. Address is 1815 Massachusetts Ave, Porter Square Cambridge, MA 02140 (617) 354-7766 (www.taverninthesquare.com). Also just a short walk from the Porter Sq T stop on the red line.

Or . . . come by the home of Michigan football in Boston at THE PLACE, 2 Broad Street, Boston, MA (www.theplaceboston.com). The Place has been a raucous Wolverine den for several years! This venue offers: A large room for nearly 200, so we can all be together (well, it's a bit tight, but we're all friends); plasma screen TVs all around; a free buffet at every game; plenty of validated parking right across the street; and easy access via the MBTA Blue (State/Aquarium), Orange (State/Haymarket) and Green Lines (Government Center). Come early—The Place fills up fast!

Football tickets now available for the 2008-09 Season

It is hard to believe that the time is already approaching...but before you know it September will be here! The University of Michigan Club of Greater Boston is proud to announce that we have a limited amount of tickets available for several home and away games. We will have a limited number of tickets to the following 8 games:

Utah-August 30. Time TBA SOLD OUT
Miami-Ohio September 6th. Time TBA SOLD OUT
Wisconsin- September 27th. Time TBA
Illinois -October 4 Time 3:30
Toledo -October 11 Time TBA
At Purdue -November 1. Time TBA
At Minnesota - November 8 Time TBA
Northwestern -November 15. Time TBA

Tickets will be available on a first come/first served basis and must be purchased by an alumni association member of the Boston chapter. Ticket prices are $55-$59 each and will all be in the same section of the endzone. For the Homecoming game (Illinois) and all away games ( (Purdue and Minnesota) you must purchase tickets to the Alumni tailgate with each individual ticket you buy for $25 each.
PLEASE NOTE: We will not have any other tickets to any other games. DEADLINE FOR PURCHASE IS 8/25/08

Freshmen sendoff success story

Every year, we hold a "Sendoff" event for Boston-area students on their way to Michigan. Imagine our surprise when we read about two alums that "met at a barbecue in the Boston area for students going to Michigan prior to their freshman year" and went on to open Harvard Square's Crema Cafe! Congratulations to Ms. Baer-Kahn and Ms. Brush, and thanks to the Boston Metro for advertising our alumni club!

Facebook and MySpace pages launched

We have created pages on Facebook and MySpace where local club members can connect. We invite you to join these groups if you're a Facebook or MySpace user. All official content will still be posted at http://umcgb.org, but we'll try to keep the external pages up to date as well. Update 1/22/08: the Facebook page URL changed when we opened the group to all users.

Big Ten Network Sports Channel to Launch August 2007

You may have heard about the Big Ten Network sports channel, which will go live in August 2007. At the moment, the only way for you to get this channel in the Greater Boston area is by switching to DIRECTTV or DISH Network. If you want your cable provider to carry this channel, call 1-866-WANT-B10 to let them know your interest in receiving the network. Right now, major local cable providers such as Comcast do not carry this channel.

Why is this channel important to me?, you may ask. This channel will offer expanded coverage of Big Ten sports that we won't otherwise have, historic footage, coaches' shows, as well as academic content originating from the Big Ten Conference.

What if I don't have DIRECTTV or if my local cable provider doesn't carry the channel? Unfortunately, you will be unable to watch part of this year's Michigan football season! [Both of our official locations for watching Michigan Football — The Place (Boston) and Tommy Doyle's (Harvard Square) — will have all of the games available.] To date, the Big Ten Network is carrying exclusive coverage of the following games: Hey Wolverines, this is our season opener! Appalachian State (Sept. 1) as well as two games in a row, Northwestern (Sept. 29), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 6), [UPDATE and Purdue (Oct. 13), and possibly Michigan State (Nov. 3) which would be absurd to miss].

How Do I Change My Profile or Email Settings?

If you want to change your information with Ann Arbor (where we get the list from), such as if you moved or changed email addresses, go to online services, and Update your Profile. You may still get another email at the old address, but it will get switched over.

In-Circle Networking Tool Launched

We have recently launched a brand-new networking tool called inCircle that is taking the place of the Online Alumni Directory. On September 30, 2004, the Alumni Association will discontinue its Online Alumni Directory service.

inCircle is the new alumni networking tool exclusively for Alumni Association members. inCircle lets Michigan alumni connect online with friends and friends-of-friends based on shared interests, common acquaintances, professions, location, and other criteria. You can also use inCircle to search for alumni you are trying to contact, and you can send messages directly to all users through inCircle.
